Water
“Water” is both a physical description of the implied function of the work and is derived from the verse “whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered” from the Mishlei in Hebrew or Book of Proverbs in English. The title, pulling from religious scripture, references the ubiquity of religious morality in society, which is contrasted by lived realities of care, violence, and human dignity. This work explores feeding, and collection of human waste. The work consists of ceramics sculptures that are derived from feeding devices, bottles, urinals, and bedpans, used to care for the ill, elderly, or young. The work explores the realities and reciprocities of care for others' bodies. Some of these vessels are distorted by being held by the body. They impact and are impacted by the body. The work projects tenderness but also expresses violence and grief in ways that are intended to be poetic and embodied.
